Tutankhamun Exhibition
Leading museum and exhibition sustainable systems manufacturer, Protean Design provided the ideal solution for a recent major touring exhibition for Tutankhamun and the World of the Pharaohs.
The exhibition was organised by National Geographic, Arts and Exhibition International and AEG Exhibitions, which opened in Volkerkunde Museum in Vienna. Currently the touring exhibition is in Indianapolis having travelled from Houston, Texas and after this it will then continue to travel around the US where it will be set up at a number of venues.
The display cases housed treasures that are 2,500 to 4,600 years old with unique header units, designed and produced by Protean Design. Working closely with Click Netherfield, who built the showcases, Protean designed and produced completely new demountable header sections, which met the previous challenge outlined within the brief of cost effectively changing the language of the annotations.
The new units were created to add height to the displays and were based upon the demountable Protean reForm system allowing the units to be disassembled for shipping.
Previous travelling exhibits struggled to provide descriptions for the exhibits that were inter-changeable, within budget and that reflected the quality of the rest of the display artefacts. The new Protean header units were precision manufactured from recyclable Di-Bond composite aluminum sheets, with text and graphics direct printed on to the surface.
Another cost saving implication of the header panels were that they were supplied flat, making them easy to pack and transport and could be locked into place on site, utilising the unique clipping system within Protean's new reForm walling system.
The Protean reForm format provided not only a striking and professional display in keeping with the rest of the exhibit, but also one that was flexible enough to be updated simply and cost effectively, wherever the display is utilised worldwide
Header units were also internally illuminated in some instances utilising LED lighting and a recyclable PETG cladding.
The overall appearance of the Tutankhamun exhibition demonstrates that the Protean designed header units are an elegant solution. Fully customisable, easy to install and visually attractive, the Protean system is applicable to any museum or exhibition, where quality, ease of use and cost savings from reusability are important factors.
