Tate Modern
Protean Design provides unique, versatile and sustainable display systems for installations in exhibitions, museums and galleries. Refreshing the look and re-configuring exhibition display spaces are constant challenges for museums and galleries - Reform Gallery walling provides a cost effective solution.
Currently Protean Design is working with Tate Modern and has developed Reform Gallery for use in the large temporary exhibition galleries, which are regularly re-configured on average three times a year, and previously at each changeover involved dismantling and disposing of large 4840mm high display walls, constructed from traditional MDF clad metal stud.
Protean Design was tasked to provide a gallery walling solution for Tate Modern that is reusable / sustainable, that as a flexible and adaptable system provides few restrictions to design layout concepts and that meets the challenge of storage during periods of non use by being fully demountable.
Stephen Mellor, Co-ordinator, Exhibition & Displays, from Tate Modern commented on the recent two temporary exhibition installations: "We are delighted with the Gallery Reform solution that Protean Design has provided. We have just had the first ‘season' of whole exhibition re-configurations and it has been a great success. This is due to the ease of making layout changes, with little physical movement of materials within the building, and the products green credentials - ensuring that there was almost a total lack of waste during the re-configuration process. We estimate we will eventually save 600 sheets of MDF, not to mention jumbo stud, after three exhibition changes of the walling. These recent changeovers we know have already saved over 350m2 of MDF from landfill."
The Reform Gallery walling system provides a fully re-usable and re-configurable heavy duty aluminium framework, which is clad with bespoke re-usable MDF panels. The ‘snap-on' application of the panels to the face of the framework uses the unique and concealed ReForm clip-strips - no screws!
The 3mm join between adjoining sheets is concealed by a simple infill seated into a rebate along the edges of the panels. This infill is then taped and filled on site leaving a seamless wall ready for painting. When it comes to re-configuring/demounting, the infill strip is removed pulling out cleanly ‘in one go' all the filler material and exposing again the 3mm join - allowing for the release of the clip-strip and the removal of the panels - undamaged, clean and ready for re-use.
The Protean team design the Reform Gallery to any practicable module(s) to suit each particular venue or design needs either with minimal fixing to the fabric of the building or free-standing or with showcase inserts - a true system with endless design possibilities.
Reform Gallery is part of the Protean Reform range.
